Red Lobster closing: 24 more Florida locations could shut down. Here's where

USA TODAY NETWORK - Florida

Just abruptly closing nearly 100 Red Lobster locations around the country last month, including at least 17 in Florida, wasn't enough to stem the company's financial woes. Cheddar bay biscuits may become even harder to find.

In the filed last week, Red Lobster's owner listed 228 rejected leases the company said would keep losing money. Some of them were among the locations that were shuttered but there are still 135 in jeopardy, according to .

One of them is Red Lobster's iconic Times Square location in New York City. The state losing the most locations would be Florida, where the company was founded. In the filing 26 Florida restaurants were listed, but two of them ֱ Altamonte Springs and Leesburg ֱ already closed in May.

Red Lobster, which started in Lakeland, Florida and grew to be the largest seafood chain in the world, said it has more than $1 billion in debt and less than $30 million in cash on hand, . It plans to sell the business to its lenders for financing to keep going.

While some blamed the chain's popular "endless shrimp promotion" for bringing the company down, experts pointed to inflationary prices, lease obligations above market rates, and operational decisions.
